Application | Previous Residents
Apply now for the CTRI Innovations Residency, a limited residency program offered by Mothers News / Rhododendron Festival / Jacob Berendes, in which I take you out to a coffee shop and buy you a cup of coffee (or tea), we talk for a little bit, and maybe walk around a little, maybe not. There is no other aspect to this residency and it lasts for the duration of a regular "let's get a cup of coffee" session (in practice this tends to be somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half). There is no travel allotment or stipend beyond one cup of coffee (or tea), but depending on where we go, refills may be available at no additional cost. Fancy coffee drinks (latte et al) are not an option, sorry. Iced coffee OK. CTRI stands for "Coffee/Tea Rhode Island".
This is an artists residency, but please be aware that my definition of "artist" is pretty broad and includes anyone with any sort of creative practice. You don't have to be "a pro" by any means, nor do you have to be pursuing a "fine art", but "So, what are you working on?" should be considered as viable baseline conversation.
This residency is open to people I know, people I don't know, people I kind of know, and even to people with whom I already have a regular "let's get coffee" practice. You do not have to live in Rhode Island but you have to be able to physically transport yourself here somehow. This is for individuals only, no groups, collectives, or partnerships.
The residency can occur at any coffee shop in Providence except Starbucks, which I reject on ideological grounds. Dunkies ok. The default coffee shop is Seven Stars on Broadway, because I'm usually near there and usually on foot. An incomplete list of possible shops is maintained here: [link]. Suggestions of other coffee shops are always welcome!
This residency does not cost anything to do or to apply to. This is a real thing and people who have completed this residency are welcome to put this on their curriculum vitae. There's an interview with me on the ARTnews website that may answer more questions you might have, the link is here: [link]
To apply, please read the instructions below. Even for people that I already know (even if well) I would appreciate it if you would fill out the application completely. Otherwise we're like, "just hanging out", which is cool, but outside the domain of this project. It's OK to apply for a date way in advance, especially if there's a date in the future you know you're going to be in Rhode Island. Fridays are unavailable, sorry. "CTRI Innovations Residency" is an anagram for "ORDINARINESS CONNECTIVITY". Thank you!
